Final Project Guidelines and Ideas
Demonstrate the things you have learned this semester and have some fun at the same time.
Assignment:
1. Create a large spreadsheet (with formulas) or a large database that will be useful to you or useful to someone you know. (You may ask a teacher or family member if they would like for you to do something for them.)
2. The research, database or spreadsheet design process, and data input should take about three class periods. (If you finish early, I have ideas for other fun.)
3. A rule of thumb for a database would be at least seven fields and at least 50 records. Similarly, a spreadsheet would have at least seven columns and 50 rows of data. At least two of your spreadsheet rows should involve a formula.
Project Ideas:
1. Create a family telephone directory that you can print and keep in a small binder or folder near your main family telephone. In addition to names and phone numbers, create address fields also. You may want to create fields for birthdays, too.
2. Organize your CD collection, or the collection of a family member. Fields might include: Name of CD, Artist(s), Year Produced, Style of Music, Names of Songs. (Since you will enter a lot of song titles, you do not have to create seven fields in this database.) You will need to list at least 25 CDs.
3. Similar to the CD collection, you may want to create a database of video games with the special codes to make your games more fun.
4. Do online research about the nutrition of fast food (including salt content/sodium and fat grams). Prepare a lengthy database of your favorite fast foods and their nutritional value. You might start your research at the following website: http://www.chowbaby.com/10_2000/fastfood/fast_food_nutrition.asp .
5. Use the above website and research Raleigh restaurants. Create a database of local restaurants, addresses (include zip codes or region of city) , phone numbers, and type of cuisine along with any other fields that might interest you, such as price range.
6. Prepare a database of Heisman trophy winners, their schools, their positions on the teams, their hometowns, the years they played and they year they won the Heisman, etc.
7. Prepare a database or statistical spreadsheet of info from your favorite team(s).
8. Mrs. Holley would like to develop a database project to use in her health class during second semester. It will relate to diseases. Design a database that has the following fields: Name of Disease, Cause(s), Discovered When, Symptoms, Communicable?, Curable?, Chronic?, Genetic?, Curable?, Duration. Locate several websites that her students could use as they research their project.
9. Pretend that you have $400 to spend for holiday gifts. Your schedule is packed and you don't have time to shop at local stores. Go to online stores and purchase gifts for all your family and friends. Create a spreadsheet showing Name of Shopping Site, URL, Description of Item, Product Number, Price, Shipping, Tax, etc.
10. The above ideas are just to get your creative brain working. Feel free to design your own project based on what you are interested in - ice dancing, Irish dancing, horseback riding, et cetera!!!
