About West Millbrook

West Millbrook Middle School is a well-established, well-maintained middle school, located on an expansive campus in the northern area of Raleigh, North Carolina. Throughout its thirty-plus year history, families have chosen to move into the West Millbrook school assignment area because it is known for its excellent academic and extra-curricular programs, along with its caring and supportive staff who genuinely enjoy working with the pre-teen and young teen.

Serving students and families as a "traditional middle school," the school offers a variety of highly regarded academic and elective courses. The arts program is known throughout the region to be particularly strong. Course selections in the arts include band and orchestra/strings, dance, vocal arts, and visual arts. Students preparing for success in the world economy also have a choice of three levels of Spanish, along with a multitude of career and technical education courses that focus on 21st century skills. These courses include technology courses that emphasize STEM (science, technology, engineering, and math) skills, business, finance, information technology, and marketing courses, as well as family and consumer science courses. Career development is an underlying theme within most of the school's curricular areas. Additionally, we offer three high school electives where students can earn a high school credit in the areas of English, earth/environmental science, or geography. These courses are all offered virtually. Students can choose to complete the course completely independently or register for an elective class so they can complete the majority of the work during the school day.

In core and special classes, teachers use a variety of instructional methods, such as paideia seminars, literature circles, hands-on learning, problem-based learning, manipulatives, and collaborative learning to engage and prepare students for a future where team-work and collaboration skills are imperative. Teacher-directed and student self-guided learning is facilitated through the use of many state-of-the art tools, including interactive white boards, multi-media presentation applications, online math and reading tools, blogs and wikis. In addition to our regular classrooms, our large campus provides the opportunity for outdoor learning spaces, as well as an outdoor classroom.

Students identified as "exceptional children" are served throughout the school through a differentiated instruction model, which focuses on academic relevance and rigor for everyone. Academically gifted students are clustered in groups of ten to fifteen within their language arts classes. Our outstanding math program offers the expected courses for sixth, seventh, and eighth grades, along with pre-algebra and algebra. We also offer a geometry class for students who complete pre-algebra and algebra prior to their 8 th grade year. We continue to be committed to offering our geometry class with an outstanding teacher instead of an independent, virtual learning experience.

Outside of these academic programs, West Millbrook students have opportunities to participate in a wide variety of sports and clubs that focus on enriching the students' middle school experience and preparing them for life beyond adolescence. The certified staff consists of a principal, three assistant principals, three guidance counselors, a media specialist, a career development/technology specialist, an academically gifted coordinator/instructional resource teacher, and an instructional staff of approximately 70 teachers and assistants. Many faculty members hold Master's degrees in their emphasis areas and several hold National Board Certifications.
