May 13

This is Kelly Aman, principal of West Millbrook Middle School, with a recorded message for the week of May 13.

On Friday, all students were given 2 letters regarding spring testing. Please ask your student for these letters. Additionally, students in Ms. Arnold's, Ms. Huber's and Mr. Thomas' 2 nd period classes have been given a letter regarding the annual Youth Risk Behavior Survey. If your child has one of these teachers, please review that letter.

NC Extend Testing will begin the week of May 13 and EOGs and EOCs will begin the week of May 20 and continue through May 31. Proctors are urgently needed. Visit our website to sign up.

The spring strings and band concert is on Tuesday at 7pm in the gym. The spring art show will be held in the media center at 6:30 that evening.

8 th graders who will be attending Millbrook High School next year should plan to attend Wildcat Academy Open House on May 15 at 6:30pm.

Registration is now open for summer sports camps. West Millbrook offers sports camps for Baseball, Girls Volleyball and Football. Registration forms are available in the main office or on the athletics page of our website.

May 6

NC Extend Testing will begin the week of May 13 and EOGs and EOCs will begin the week of May 20 and continue through May 31. W e will need approximately 100 volunteers to contribute a morning of time.  Will you please consider proctoring one or more days?  We desperately need help on May 20, 21, 22 or 29.  Go to our homepage, wmms.net , and click the link to the sign-up form.

The Healthful Living Department would like to remind the parents or guardians of our 8th grade students that our Reproductive Health and Safety unit will be starting on May 13th 2013 and continuing until May 24th. If you would like your child to "OPT" out of some or all of the material then we will need a letter addressed to your Healthful Living teacher no later than this Friday May 10th. The words "Opt Out" must be included in the letter. If you would like to review the material then please contact your child's Healthful Living teacher this week.

Registration is now open for summer sports camps. West Millbrook offers sports camps for Baseball, Girls Volleyball and Football.

April 22

The WMMS PTA meets Tuesday night at 7pm in the media center. All parents are welcome.

Our April Character Education luncheon is Wednesday. This month's trait is Good Judgment.

Third quarter A Honor Roll breakfast is on Friday, April 26.

The WMMS PTA has a family spirit night at PDQ on Friday, April 26! 10% of sales will be donated to the WMMS PTA. Come out and enjoy great foot and support your school at the same time.

April 15

This is Kelly Aman, principal of West Millbrook Middle School, with a recorded message for the week of April 15.

Report cards were sent home on Friday. Please make certain to ask your student for his/her report card. Please sign the report card envelope and return it with your child.

On Thursday, West Millbrook will host our rising 6 th graders. Fifth graders from our feeder elementary schools will be on campus from 9:45am – 11:15am for orientation and a school tour. At 6:00pm parents of rising 6 th graders are invited to attend a parent information session.

Friday, April 19, is an early release day. School will dismiss for students at 12:30pm so that teachers can engage in required professional development from 1:00pm – 4:00pm.

We are excited to be hosting a unique Career Fair on Friday's early release day for our sixth graders.  On that morning 18 vehicles, from a huge military vehicle to a tiny smart car, will fill our carpool loop starting at 8:15.  At that time, the carpool loop will be closed. Parents delivering students who are late or picking up students who are checking out early will need to use the staff parking lot near the stadium. The truck fair will conclude at 11 a.m. and the carpool loop will reopen to parents at that time.

I'm pleased to report that we have only a few dress code violations last week. Please continue to help us ensure that all students are dressed appropriately for school.

The track conference meet is Tuesday @ Rolesville. Boys soccer is away on Wednesday. Softball and baseball are away on Thursday.

April 8

This is Kelly Aman, principal of West Millbrook Middle School, with a recorded message for the week of April 8.

Welcome back from spring break. School resumes for teachers and students tomorrow, April 8.

Beginning Monday, West Millbrook will operate on an EOG prep schedule which adds additional minutes into each class for the remainder of the school year. Our start and end times will not change.

Prior to spring break we received several complaints from the neighborhood behind West Millbrook regarding erratic driving and blocked driveways. The City of Raleigh is conducting a traffic study on Mourning Dove and surrounding streets to assess the pedestrian traffic in that area.

We also had some phone calls about students running across the 5 lanes of Strickland Road both before and after school. Many of us remember the tragedy that struck Durant Road Middle School a few years ago when 2 students were struck by a car while they were crossing Durant Road. One of those students died. Please talk with your children about pedestrian safety.

We have a full week of athletics this week. Track is at East Millbrook on Tuesday. Baseball is home on Tuesday and at Heritage on Thursday. Soccer is at Durant on Wednesday and Softball is at Durant on Thursday.

Report cards will be issued to students on Friday.

Welcome back! It will be good to see our students again tomorrow.

March 25

Spring break begins on Thursday, March 28. School resumes on April 8.

If you are checking your child out during his/her lunch please arrive a few moments early as it takes additional time to get students from the cafeteria.

March 18

Recently we've seen a significant increase in the number of daily requests to get messages to students from parents. So that we can maintain the integrity of our instruction and so that we can ensure we have enough time to get the urgent messages to our students before the end of the day, messages will only be sent to students during 6 th period. If you have an urgent message that needs to be delivered to your child please make certain to phone us prior to 1:15. Please make every effort to coordinate after school transportation and activities with your child before the school days begin.

Last week students received a letter with their Case 21 scores for the second benchmark exam.  Please look over the report with your child.  If you have any questions about how to interpret the scores please contact Caroline Hartsell at 676-5019.  If you have any questions concerning what your child can do to improve their scores please contact your child's teacher.

March 11

On Monday March 11, pictures for soccer and track will be taken after school. Softball plays at home on Monday and AT Wendell on Thursday. Baseball is at Davis Drive on Monday and at home on Thursday. Track is home on Tuesday. Soccer is at Heritage on Wednesday.

ALL 8th grade students received a small packet last week with the information necessary to register for their High School courses. Ms. Clark has only received 12 registrations, out of the 350 students here at WMMS. Students need to return their print out of registration to either their 1st period teacher or Mrs. Clark by March 15th. Eighth graders also received a letter pertaining to the 8th grade dance. This letter outlines behavioral expectations of your child at school as they complete their final middle school year. Also included in this letter are the Wake County Board Policy Dress Code requirements. Our goal is to have the entire 8th grade student body attend the dance. This will help your child create lasting and fond memories as they end their middle school years. Please review this letter with your child and help us by reminding them of the importance of meeting those expectations.

The end of 3 rd quarter is rapidly approaching. Now is a good time to check in with your child and his/her teachers to be certain your child is on track academically. Your child's counselor is also a good resource.

March 4

Spring athletics begin this week. Softball and baseball are home on Monday. Soccer is at home on Wednesday and softball plays away on Thursday.

Our spring band and jazz band will be in concert on Tuesday evening at 7pm in the multipurpose room.

High School Registration materials for 8 th graders have been sent home. All 8 th graders should complete this process prior to spring break.

Parents, please remember that carpool drop off begins at 7:50am. Students must remain with you in the vehicle until 7:50am.

March Madness is coming!  This fun family event will be held on Friday, March 8th from 6-8PM in our gym.  There will be basketball games, performances by school groups,  a free throw contest and raffles-including the chance to win an iPad mini.  You won't want to miss watching the staff play basketball against our own Wildcat teams.  Tickets will be on sale this week during lunch Wednesday through Friday.  Admission is only $3 per person.

February 25

Congratulations to the Boys and Girls Basketball teams and the cheerleaders, as well as their coaches: Mr. Miterko, Ms. Brown, Ms. Arnold, Ms. Brock and Mr. Calhoun. West Millbrook won the Middle School Sportsmanship Award for the winter athletic season.

PTA will meet on Tuesday, February 26 at 7pm in the media center. All parents are welcome.

Identakid Picture Information was sent home with students on Friday. Be certain to review this information and determine if you want your child to participate.

February's character trait is Integrity and this month's students will be recognized on Wednesday.

February 18

Monday, February 18 is a teacher workday. School resumes for students on Tuesday, February 19.

On Tuesday at 6:30 Millbrook High School hosts open house for rising 9 th graders who will attend Millbrook next year. On Thursday at 6pm Wakefield High School hosts open house for rising 9 th grades who will attend Wakefield next year.

On Wednesday, Via Roman Duo will present our 2 nd cultural arts performance of the year. All students will participate in the grade level assemblies. Thanks to our PTA for making these opportunities available for our students.

There will be a dance Friday February 22nd from 5:30-7:30 in the gym.  Students will receive permission slips during Guided Study on Tuesday.  Tickets will only be sold at lunch on Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday for $3.00.  No tickets will be sold at the door.  Students' rides should be aware of the new pickup traffic pattern which will be posted online as well as sent home with students who purchase a ticket. 

On Friday, February 22 WMMS hosts the school dance from 5:30 – 7:30. The theme is Students must have a signed permission form and purchase a ticket in advance in order to attend. Tickets will not be sold at the door. In an effort to alleviate congestion as parents are picking students up following the dance, we have incorporated new procedures. Sixth graders will be picked up in the front carpool loop. Seventh and eighth graders will be picked up in the stadium parking lot. If you have both a 6th grader and an upper classman, you will pick both up in the front carpool loop. The dance ends at . Any student not picked up by will not be permitted to attend future extra-curricular activities.

CARPOOL REMINDER:

WMMS Safety Expectations:

1.        In order to provide safe and orderly morning and afternoon car drop-off/pick-up , we are asking everyone to remember the safety expectations and patterns.

2.        All drop-off and pickup should occur in the front of the school.

3.        In order to provide safe entrance of busses and timely departure, there is only one carpool drop-off.

4.        You may not use the entrance/exit for busses.

  February 11

On Tuesday at 6:30, Sanderson High School hosts open house for rising 9th graders who will attend Sanderson next year.

This is a reminder that we are not able to accept Valentine’s deliveries at school.

Friday, February 15 is an early release day. Students will be dismissed at 12:30. Teachers will be in professional development until 4pm. Friday is also our annual Career Fair. All students will participate in the career fair during the school day.

February 4

Congratulations to Katie Moore (8th), Alex McKeveny (7th) and Aaric Han (6th!) who travelled to Gibsonville over the weekend to participate in Central District Band.

Congratulations to Allison Nowak who was received the West Millbrook Diane Kent Parker First Year Teacher of the Year Award. Ms. Nowak will go on to compete at the district level. Kudos to our 7 th grade teachers who swept this year's awards with Mr. Redmond winning Teacher of the Year and Ms. Nowak's recognition this week.

On Monday, February 4 there will be a soccer interest meeting for all boys interested in soccer. The meeting will be at 7:55am in the mat room. See Coach Hanne for more information.

On Monday, WMMS hosts rival East Millbrook for girls and boys basketball. Games begin at 3:45. Our girls will play at home on Wednesday in the conference match up and the boys will play Thursday at an away site that will be determined following Monday's game.

On Tuesday, February 5, our PTA will host Drugs Uncovered. This is a program designed specifically for parents.

On Friday, we will hold our 2 nd quarter A Honor Breakfast at 7:25am in the cafeteria.

Student Council is sponsoring our annual Talent Show on Friday from 4m – 6pm in the gym. Students must have a signed permission slip in order to attend. Permission slips are available in guided study. Please come support our talented Wildcats!

January 28

On Monday, January 28, report cards will be issued to students. Included in the report card envelope is a parent survey. Please take a moment to complete the survey online or return the paper copy with your child's report card envelope. Parent feedback is essential in our quest to be the premier middle school!

Monday night our school's Business Alliance will host Business Alliance Basketball Bash as WMMS takes on Durant! Come out for a great family night that includes mascots, prizes and a chance to interact with the fantastic business members who support your child's education! Bring the whole family for some great basketball.

PTA will be on Tuesday at 7pm in the media center.

Talent show auditions begin on Wednesday after school.

8 th grade parents should plan to attend a General Information Session about High School Registration at 6:30pm in the media center on Wednesday.

There will be a baseball interest meeting at 7:55am on Thursday in our mat room. 7 th and 8 th graders interested in playing should attend.

Come see the West Millbrook Cheerleaders in competition on Saturday, February 2 at 9:30am at Leesville Road High School. Admission is $8 and we'd love to have a strong crowd supporting our cheerleaders.

7 th graders will be participating in a Signs of Suicide program facilitated by our school psychologist, counselors and 7 th grade healthful living teachers. Students brought home information for parents to review. If you have questions, contact Kim Getty, our psychologist or your 7 th grader's healthful living teacher for more information.

January 23

Reach Out and Touch is a student run organization at North Carolina State University that volunteers to spend a few Saturday mornings throughout the semester offering help to the local youth. We will cover various topics such as math, science, English, and history. Dates are:

These sessions will be held in the First Year Commons building on Cates Ave at NCSU.

January 14

Congratulations to John Schuster who won the WMMS Geography Bee. John will move on to compete at the state level.

Congratulations to Katie Moore, Alex McKeveny and Aaric Hahn who have been selected for All District Band.

On Tuesday, January 15 all students will take the Case 21 Benchmark assessment for reading. This assessment will last approximately 2 ½ hours.

On Wednesday, January 16 the PTA will host a Family Fun Night at Moe's and Moonlight Swirl. Log on to our website to print a flier. Moe's and Moonlight Swirl will donate 15% of your purchase to our PTA.

There will be a meeting for students interested in participating in track this spring on Wednesday at 7:55am in the mat room.

The quarter ends on Friday, January 18. This is a great time to check your child's bookbag and binder to be certain he/she is organized and ready to begin the new quarter on Wednesday, January 23.

On Monday, January 7 assignment strips will be sent home with students. These strips provide parents with the school to which their children have been assigned for the 2013-14 school year. Please ask your child for this envelope when he/she comes home on Monday so you can review the school to which your child is assigned next year.

West Millbrook will host the Geography Bee on Tuesday, January 8 at 8:15am.

The Winter Chorus Concert will be on Thursday, January 10 at 6pm in the multipurpose room. The Dance Concert will be on Thursday, January 10 at 7pm in the multipurpose room.

We have girls and boys basketball on Monday at Durant Road Middle School.

January 1, 2013

This is Kelly Aman, principal of West Millbrook Middle School, with a recorded message for the week of January 1, 2013.

School resumes on Wednesday, January 2 for teachers and students.

During the week of January 2 – 4, West Millbrook will practice its 2 nd lockdown drill of the 2012-13 school year. Our first lockdown drill was last October and students did very well. Practicing these safety precautions is an important component of our school’s emergency operation plans.

On January 8, West Millbrook will participate in the Geography Bee.

There are no basketball games this week.

I hope you and your family enjoyed the holiday break. I’m looking forward to our students return on Wednesday.

December 17

The Food Drive ends on Tuesday, December 18.

On Wednesday our PTA will celebrate our monthly character ed lunch. This month we are recognizing kindness.

We have 4 home basketball games this week. On Monday West Millbrook plays Leesville Road and on Thursday we play Wakefield. Come out and support our Wildcats!

Friday, December 21 is an early release day. Students will be dismissed at 12:30pm so that teachers can engage in professional development in the afternoon. Winter break also begins on Friday. School resumes on Wednesday, January 2.

Parents, I am deeply saddened by the tragedy that struck Newtown, Connecticut last Friday. Each one of us is profoundly impacted by this senseless act of violence in a school. Over the past several years, we have learned that students cope best when routines are maintained. So this week, though our flag flies at half mast in memory of those students and faculty members who lost their lives, we will strive for normalcy at West Millbrook. We'll continue to work on projects, take tests and focus our energy on learning.

As we enter our Winter Break holiday next Friday, all of us at West Millbrook wish you and your family a safe and happy holiday.

December 10

6th Grade Parents:  We would like to thank you for all of the support that you provided our teams during the 1st Annual 6th Grade Science Expo.  Your many contributions and participation as a volunteer allowed the event to be a successful hands-on learning experience for all students!

Interims were sent out this past week. Contact your child's guidance counselor if you did not receive interims.

SPAN will be unavailable for system maintenance December 7 – 10.

Holiday Hugs 2012 has arrived at WMMS. To adopt someone for Holiday Hugs simply come to the office, select a snowflake and receive a Hugs bag with information about the person you'll provide holiday cheer for along with directions. If you have questions, please contact Mrs. Clark at 919-870-4059.

December 3

Interims will be sent out the week of December 3. If you do not receive interims for all of your child's classes this week contact your child's guidance counselor.

Last week 2 important items were sent home with students:

•  A PTA flyer about our fundraiser with a new restaurant PDQ for their soft opening. This fundraiser will support the school's technology plan.

•  A letter containing your child's scores from the first Case 21 Benchmark assessments that were administered this fall. If you did not receive your child's scores, contact the team leader or your child's guidance counselor.

I'm excited to report that our PTA has revived Cultural Arts at West Millbrook and our first Cultural Arts Performance for the 2012-13 School Year will be on December 4 when Transit, an a Capella vocal music band, visits WMMS.

I’m excited to report that our PTA has revived Cultural Arts at West Millbrook and our first Cultural Arts Performance for the 2012-13 School Year will be on December 4 when Transit, an a Capella vocal music band, visits WMMS.

Monday, November 12 is a school holiday. Please remember the men and women in our armed forces who serve our country so nobly and thank a veteran for his/her sacrifice!

Report cards were sent home last week. If you did not receive your child's report card, please contact your child's guidance counselor.

We've had several concerns about students crossing the street dangerously at the end of the day. Please remind your child that Strickland Road is very dangerous so extreme care should be used when crossing and students should cross at the city designated crossing area of the road.

Boys and Girls Basketball tryouts will begin Tuesday, November 13th.  A current physical, proof of insurance and concussion awareness form must be turned in to the coach to be eligible for tryouts.

West Millbrook swept the 2012 Battle of the Brooks. Congratulations to all the players and coaches of our fall sports teams!

Our annual Battle of the Brooks football game is just around the corner ! The game is Tuesday, October 30th. It is a big deal to watch the WMMS Wildcats play the EMMMS Cougars under the lights at Millbrook High School.

Our Wildcats are the defending CHAMPIONS and they are looking to bring down the Cougars and take the trophy again this year. This is a rivalry game … and anything can happen ! The gate admission is $4. The WMMS Booster Club will sponsor a “Battle of the Brooks Afterschool Pre-Game Bash” to be held before the game. Tickets for this fun event will be sold for $10. This will include pizza, snack and a drink, transportation to MHS and admission to the game.

The Booster Club will sell tickets for three days only. Tickets will go on sale Thursday, Oct 25th during lunches from 11am until 12:30 pm. We will also sell tickets Friday, Oct 26th and Monday, October 29th. NO tickets will be sold the day of the event.
Permission slips are required to purchase a ticket to the bash and all students must have their own ride home from Millbrook High School after the game. Get your BOB Permission Slip from your pe teacher or the front office. If you have questions, please contact Karen Fiorini or Michelle Connell.

This week is our annual BOOK FAIR WEEK! Don't forget to come by the media center to purchase books! All profits of the book fair will go towards purchasing novels for our Language Arts classrooms which directly benefits our children! We're open Monday through Friday, 7:45am-3:00pm and Friday night, 5:30-8pm during the Fall Frenzy. Also check the WMMS website for more information about our online fair!

On Tuesday, October 23, all students at WMMS will take the Case 21 Benchmark Assessment in Reading. Students will be testing from 8:30am until 11:15am and must remain in the testing environment for the entire time.

The academic quarter ends on October 30. Please check with your student to be certain he/she has completed any missing assignments.
BETA Club Inductions are October 25.

Our 4th annual Fall Festival is Friday, October 26, from 5:30 pm to 7:30 pm. Entrance to the event is free and open to students, family & community. Highlights of the evening include: Face Painting Games Food Booths Music Dancing Chili Cook-Off Staff Pie Auction a Book Fair

October 15

Friday, October 19 is an early release day. Students will be dismissed at 12:30pm. During the school day on Friday, 8 th grade students will take the EXPLORE test. This is a national test from ACT and beginning this year all 8 th graders in North Carolina will participate in this national testing program. EXPLORE can provide your son/daughter with an early indicator of readiness for college, provide important information for building a high school course plan, and help him/her identify careers in which he/she might be interested. Explore is a 190 minute test and our 8 th graders will be testing from 8:30am until noon.

Wednesday, October 17 from our ESL department is hosting a workshop for parents of students in our ESL program. The program will be from 6:30-8:00pm in the media center . Child care will be provided in room 212.

Free and Reduced Price applications are now due. Parents please complete this form if your child needs free or reduced price meals. Beginning October 9 students for whom a form has not been completed will need to pay full price.

On Monday & Tuesday, October 8 & 9 WMMS will hold Family Fun Spirit Nights at all 3 locations of ZPizza. 20% of the sales will be donated to our PTA. No flyers are needed; just tell the cashier that you are with West Millbrook Middle School. Also, need pizza for a group? 10% of all Catering orders for the entire month of October will be donated!

October 11 is Picture Make Up Day and Club Picture Day. Students enrolled after Sept. 12th will be photographed on Oct. 11th during Fall Picture Make-Up Day. We will also allow students who have pre-paid for a picture packet to retake their picture if they need to.

Our first school dance is Friday, October 12 from 5:30-7:30. Tickets will be sold at lunch Wed-Fri and permission slips will be available starting Tuesday. Permission slips are also available online. The theme is Blackout and students are encouraged to wear dark colored clothing; however, this is not a requirement to attend the dance. School dress code policies apply. Glowstick jewelry and snacks will be available for purchase.
We’ve had an increase in students wearing head coverings at school, including bandanas. Head coverings are not permitted. Please review this policy with your student and ensure that head coverings are left at home.

NCSU offers four dates for tutoring this semester, including October 13, October 27, November 10, and December 1. Normally, the sessions will be held in the First Year College Commons (2751 Cates Ave, Raleigh, NC 27607). However, due to North Carolina State University Open House,for the the first session, October 13, we will meet the students in front of Talley Student Center (2610 Cates Ave, Raleigh, NC 27607) and escort them to Daniels Hall a near by academic building on our campus. The sessions will be from 11AM-1PM, we ask that the students arrive by 10:50 so that we can get the most out of the two hour time period.

Football will be at home vs. Wakefield on Wednesday. We have away volleyball and soccer matches on Thursday against Wakefield. Game/Match time is 4pm. Go Wildcats!

September 24

Wednesday, September 26 is a school vacation day. School is closed for students and teachers.

Status Change Letters from Child Nutrition were sent home for students who need to complete a free or reduced application for 2012-2013. Last year's applications expire on 10/9/12. Any student not returning this form by the deadline will need to pay full price for breakfast and lunch.

We continue to work with the transportation department regarding on time arrival and departure of buses. Open House for parents of our 7th and 8th graders is Tuesday, September 18 at 5:30pm in the gym. Parents can come to the media center from 5pm – 5:30pm to complete volunteer registration and sign up for a SPAN account. Spirit wear will also be available. Parents will receive a copy of their student’s schedule in the first period class so please make certain you know who your child’s first period teacher is.

Our PTA fundraiser kicked off on Thursday. Please ask your child for his/her catalog. All orders and money are due on October 1.

This is Kelly Aman, principal of West Millbrook Middle School with a recorded message for the week of August 27.

School begins on Monday, August 27 at 8:15am. Students will report to first period. All students will receive a copy of their schedules in first period. If a student cannot remember who their first period teacher is, report to the grade level building. Administrators and counselors will have a list of students and first period teachers.

If you are carpooling this week, please allow extra time in both the morning and the afternoon. It will take several days for traffic patterns to settle. Please make certain you pull all the way forward in the carpool lane.

It usually takes 3-5 days for lunch procedures to become routine. If your child is anxious about lunch, you may want to pack lunch for the first few days. If your child will be buying lunch, please make certain he/she knows his NCWise ID number which he will have to enter in order to buy lunch. This number can be found on the upper right hand corner of student schedules. Please remind students that they may only go through the lunch line one time. If you need to put money on a lunch account please see our cafeteria manager Deborah Vandewalker in the cafeteria.

Activity buses will NOT run the week of August 27. Check our website for updated activity bus information which we will post as soon as it is available.

Athletic tryouts for football, volleyball, cheerleading and soccer begin this week. Students must have a physical in order to participate. Please check the school’s website for more information. Click the athletics tab.

Student schedules were mailed on Thursday, August 16. Parents who would like to request a schedule change should contact their child's counselor. Sixth grade parents may contact Lee Wishon at 870-4063. Seventh grade parents should contact Rae Kelly at 870-4057 and eighth grade parents will contact Dawn Clark at 870-4059.

WMMS will host a schedule walk through on Wednesday, August 22. This is a time for students to find their classrooms and meet their teachers. Parents can put money on lunch accounts, purchase PE uniforms, sign up for SPAN access and complete volunteer registration. This is a grade level specific activity. Parents of students who are new to West Millbrook are invited to a brief New Parent Orientation in the cafeteria during the 1 st 10 minutes of each Walk Through.
