The first PTA meeting of the year will take place on Tuesday September 13 at 8:30 a.m. in the media center. We would love to have everyone join us to hear about the exciting things going on at West Millbrook. This Wednesday, September 07, 2011 Lifetouch will be on campus for picture day; please dress appropriately. All students will be photographed for the yearbook during their healthful living classes. Families may also choose to purchase pictures. Students received flyers last week with all of the detailed information you need to order. Portraits offer casual, studio-style photography that gives students freedom to create a look that’s truly their own. Visit www.lifetouch.com for clothing suggestions, grooming tips, program details and more. You may also purchase packages and pre-pay on-line. To order pictures a student must either present a voucher that indicates they paid on-line or bring the order and payment on picture day. Vouchers or orders after September 7th will not be accepted. Please consider purchasing pictures as it is the school’s only fundraiser of the year.SPAN and ZAP, may or may not be two acronyms that are familiar to you, but they are important at West Millbrook this year. Student grades will be updated electronically in SPAN at a minimum of every two weeks. These updates will generally take place on a Thursday. The following week, students who have had two or more zeroes in any class will be “zapped” and required to attend an academic detention where they will complete the work they missed for at least partial credit. ZAP stands for Zeroes Aren’t Permitted. We do not consider ZAP a negative punishment but a support and a strategy to increase student accountability for quality work completion. If your child does have missing assignments that require him or her to be zapped for a particular week, you will receive a call from your child’s 3rd period teacher. SPAN should have been updated by Thursday, September 1st, but there have been some challenges since our county recently moved to a state server. If it doesn’t appear like your child’s grades are updated in a particular class by Friday, September 2nd at 4:00, please contact your child’s teacher if you have concerns. Attention parents of 6th graders: On Tuesday, September 6th from 5:30-7:00 we will host our Cookies and Conversations for 6th grade parents. This is a parent event, but if you do need to bring your child with you due to supervision challenges, we completely understand and welcome them. The evening officially begins with a welcome in the gym at 5:30. However, at 5:00 in the media center, Aimee Niebauer will present information for parents of Academically Gifted students, and members of our special programs department will also be available to answer questions. I know it may feel like you just came out to meet your child’s teachers, but please join us again where you will have an opportunity to learn about more specific team and academic information. If you have not signed up for a SPAN account or registered on-line to be a Wake County volunteer, you will be able to do both of those things in the media center. There will also be a WMMS Retro- wear "Blowout" Sale ($5 and under!) You'll find your PTA Spiritwear representative in the breezeway throughout the event. You will also be able to join the PTA if you haven’t done so already. Please join us on Tuesday evening. 7th and 8th Grade Open House will take place the following Tuesday, September 13th. Agendas for both events are posted on our website. Other Important Calendar Events Include:Monday: Labor Day Holiday, school is closed for students and staff

8-28-11 - This is A.J. Muttillo, Principal of West Millbrook Middle School, with your weekly message. You can expect to receive a weekly phone message from West Millbrook between 2:00 and 5:00 every Sunday
afternoon. The text of that phone message will always be posted on our website and emailed to team groups. If you would like to add, change, or delete the phone number where you receive the message, please email
Elizabeth Smith at eosmith@wcpss.net. Team email groups are in the process of being updated. If you were on
a list last year and emailed Diane Walters, she has updated you already this year. If you wrote down your email
address during Meet the Teacher, we are still in the process of adding those addresses to email groups and
should have that completed within the next two weeks. We are off to a great start this school year. Transportation is running fairly smoothly, cafeteria lines were much improved on Friday and students did a great job listening to important policies and procedures for this school year. We are looking forward to Monday when learning and teaching really begins. Last week, we distributed a lot of beginning of the year forms and handbooks. Please ask your child for this information, complete it, and return it on Monday. It is important for us to receive all of these completed forms as soon as possible. The Wake County Student Parent Handbook includes a verification sheet in the front of the booklet and the West Millbrook Student Handbook includes a verification form in the back, please read these handbooks with your child and return the verification forms. You also received a lunch application survey that asks if you received a lunch application this summer. It is important to return these surveys. This Friday, September 2 nd , we will kick-off our annual PTA fundraiser with grade-level assemblies and materials distribution. Please ask your child for these materials and consider contributing to our only fundraiser this year. The majority of our PTA funding is a result of this fundraiser, so please consider participating. We will provide more detailed information in subsequent weekly emails, but please be on the lookout for these packets as they will contain the detailed information you really need. Next Tuesday, September 6th , we will host our 6th grade parents for our annual Cookies and Conversations from 5:30-7:00 p.m. The evening will begin in the gym with general presentations before parents will break into different sessions with their student’s team teachers. The following Tuesday, September 13th, we will host our 7th and 8th grade parents for Open House from 5:30- 7:30. The evening will begin with presentations in the gym before following your student’s schedule to hear important information from each teacher. Prior to both Cookies and Conversations and Open House, Ms. Niebauer will present information related to Academically Gifted students. This session will be held from 5:00 to 5:25 in the media center.Weekly Calendar Events Include:

August 24, 2011 - This is A.J. Muttillo, principal of West Millbrook Middle School with a welcome back message and information that will hopefully help the first few days run smoothly. School will be in session from 8:15 to 3:00. Students may arrive on campus as early as 7:45 but must wait at the front of the school and not enter the cafeteria or buildings until 7:50. Students who will arrive by bus should be at their bus stop at least ten minutes before the bus is scheduled to arrive. Estimated times are posted on the bus lists that were mailed home, handed out during Meet the Teacher Day, and posted on our website. Bus concerns should be directed to WCPSS transportation department by calling 870.4247. If your child will ride a bus home, it is imperative that he or she knows their route number and looks at the television in 7 th period. When students see their buses posted, they should report directly to the bus stop. Please make sure your child memorizes and writes down his or her bus route number. If your child is trying out for a fall sport, Activity Bus Service is available. Buses leave our campus around 5:15 and drop students off at express stops. We have a North and South Activity Bus. These routes are posted on our website. The North Bus will make stops at Brassfield and Pleasant Union Elementary Schools, Wood Reams Apartments off Sandy Forks, North Ridge Elementary, Durant Middle, and Leadmine Elementary. The South Bus will make stops at Green Road Community Center, Poe Elementary, Joe Louis and Merrywood, Beverly and Friar Tuck, Rose and Jimmy Carter, and Calumet and Sunnybrook. Please make plans to meet your student at these stops if they aren't close to your house. If you will use the carpool lane, please remember to stay in one line, pull all the way up to the car in front of you, keep the line moving, and above all, please be safe. It generally takes a week or two before carpool , bus routes, and lunch lines run smoothly and efficiently, so please work with us and exercise patience when necessary. We are excited to welcome students for the start of the 2011-2012 school year and are eager to work with you to maintain an academic environment that is conducive to high student achievement. See you tomorrow.
