WESTMILLBROOK’S ACCELERATED READING LIST BY READING LEVEL
Sixth Graders at West Millbrook can participate in the nationally recognized Accelerated Reader program. This program combines selected lists of outstanding and popular books with user-friendly computer software. Each student selects his or her own reading materials at his or her own level. Books in the Media Center are marked with red dots indicating the reading level of Accelerated Reader titles. Students take tests in Language Arts classrooms.
The program helps to build higher-order thinking skills and a lifelong love of reading. Time is provided during Literacy to read and students are expected to read an additional 30 minutes after school each day. Language Arts teachers provide opportunities for students to visit the Media Center.
Students are tested using S.T.A.R.(Standardized Test for Assessment of Reading), to determine their reading level for Accelerated Reader books. The test indicates the student's instructional reading level and the student's ZPD (Zone of Proximal Development), the level at which a student is challenged without being frustrated. This recommended recreational reading zone is usually a range, such as 6.2 to 6.9 This is the level at which practice will provide the optimal results.
After testing their knowledge and comprehension of the book by answering multiple choice questions on a computer, students are provided immediate reinforcement in the form of reading points. The points awarded are based on length and reading level of the book, as well as on the number of questions the student answers correctly. The computer handles all scoring and record keeping automatically, and allows teachers to generate a wide variety of class and individual performance reports, helping them to both assess and motivate student reading. Students may cash in points for prizes at the Accelerated Reader store.
Parents have shared the responsibility for operating the program. These volunteers have helped to enter names, print out reading scores, solicit area businesses for prizes, and run the store. The PTA has also generously provided funds for books and test disks.
