  Parent General Information

Dear Parent,

Take-A-Child-To-Work Day is a national event observed on the 4th Thursday of April.  This year, it will be held on April 27.  This event provides students an opportunity to shadow a professional at their place of work for part of a workday.  Activities vary from merely shadowing their parents in the workplace to shadowing other business employers.  This is a partnership between the classroom and the business community.  As a part of our School-to-Career activities, West Millbrook Middle will offer eighth grade students the opportunity to participate in this year’s event so that they might better understand the relevance of schoolwork to their future career choices.  Job shadowing provides exciting reasons why students should stay in school, providing that critical link between education and success.

Your child may have already indicated an interest in a particular career area.  If so, you or your child may know of a professional who would be willing to host the student and/or others for one half of their workday. (Most shadowing experiences last from approximately 9 a.m. until 1 or 2 p.m.)  Parents will be responsible for providing appropriate transportation to and from the job site.  As with any excused absence, students will be responsible for work missed during the day.  Afterwards, students will also be expected to complete evaluations of their shadowing experience.

Participation in this event is completely voluntary.  School will proceed as usual on the day of the event.

In order to participate, the student's parent must complete and submit the REQUEST FOR EXCUSED ABSENCE FOR EDUCATIONAL REASONS form with WCPSS PHOTOGRAPHIC/VIDEOTAPING PERMISSION copied on the back (attached) to their Social Studies teacher no later than Tuesday, April 20, 2006.  The principal will review the request, and if the activity falls within valid job shadow activities, the request will be approved. After submitting their paperwork, the student will be given a packet of information containing additional information and student expectations pertaining to Take-A-Child-To-Work (WMMS Job Shadow) Day 2006.

Dates to remember:

ö      Request for Excused Absence for Educational Reasons ........................... due Thursday, April 20

ö      Photographic/Videotaping Permission ..................................................... due Thursday, April 20

ö      Student Post Shadowing Evaluation......................................................... due Friday, April 28

I am sure you agree this is a special opportunity for your son/daughter.  West Millbrook Middle School is confident this will be an exciting learning experience for your child and appreciates your assistance with this School-to-Career effort. Feel free to contact me with questions.

Sincerely,

Leonard Bullock
