Planning
and Goal Setting
for High School, College, and Career
Long before you ever enter the job market, you must begin planning for your first career. One of the first "official" steps that you'll take will be in March or April of your 8th grade spring semester. At that time, as you register for high school, and you'll declare a North Carolina high school course of study which will guide your decisions related to high school courses and electives. In order to effectively choose your high school pathway, you need to already have goals for your future. This page will help you make future plans. Remember to aim high!
It is important to consider your personality traits, things you enjoy doing, and things you do well. These links will help you get started considering your future career possibilities.
When considering careers, you must think about the future demand for certain jobs. Though many would love to be a professional ball player, a very small percentage of the population will be chosen. Be realistic!
Assignment
After you complete the Career Key (below) and review other websites of interest, create a goals sheet for yourself.
- The top of your sheet, should list a realistic career (not professional sports) that you are most interested in, and a description of the education and personality requirements necessary for success in that career.
- Next, you should outline your plan to prepare for that career.
- You should list the high school course of study that you need to follow, along with electives that you plan to take. You may want to refer to http://wmms.net/walters/registration/career_pathways.htm as you plan your electives.
- Finally, describe additional education needed (college/university, community college, certification classes, etc.)
